Maratea’s origin and history

Maratea is castled on Mount San Biagio, nicknamed the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The constitution of Maratea dates back, according to the most confirmed version, to the 8th century BC, when the Greek colonizers would have founded a inhabited nucleus on the top of the current mountain. In 1700 Maratea became an important trading port.
The name of this city seems, derive from the Greek meaning land of the wild fennel, small plant that is born in this place. According to another version, the name Maratea was instead coined by Greek settlers at the time of Magna Greece along the Gulf of Polycastro.

Don’t forget the beach of the Castrocucco shoal, where the rocks have created an enchanting natural pool or the beach of A’Gnola, sandy and extensive.
