Maratea’s origin and history

Il cristo benedicente sul monte San Biagio

Maratea is castled on Mount San Biagio, nicknamed the pearl of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

The constitution of Maratea dates back, according to the most confirmed version, to the 8th century BC, when the Greek colonizers would have founded a inhabited nucleus on the top of the current mountain. In 1700 Maratea became an important trading port.

The name of this city seems, derive from the Greek meaning land of the wild fennel, small plant that is born in this place. According to another version, the name Maratea was instead coined by Greek settlers at the time of Magna Greece along the Gulf of Polycastro.

The town of maratea

“The city of 44 churches” is that also known Maratea because of its numerous churches, hermits, newsagents and monasteries scattered throughout the city and much of the surrounding territory.

In the old town of Maratea, in Piazza Cavour reigns the Church of the Sorrow, dating back to the seventeenth century, in the Baroque style with a fresco depicting the Sorrowful Madonna and on the right wall of the nave is painted “The Martyr of St. Biagio”, from the seventeenth century.

It is also interesting to visit the Church of the Immaculate, adorned with precious frescoes, the Church of St. Mary Major and the Church of Our Lady of Olives, an ancient hermitage that preserves frescoes from the 14th-15th century.

The town of Maratea, full of narrow alleys, white houses offers renowned restaurants to dine in.

The sea the beaches of Maratea

If you are in Maratea you can’t visit the Marina di Maratea, where you can find beaches and natural caves. In the summer you can visit the well-known Cave of Wonders, also called the Marina Cave of Maratea, discovered in 1929 during the construction of s.S. 19 of the Calabries. The cave, which has an area of about 90 meters, has a single room. Going down the artificial steps carved into the rock, you reach the floor, topped with columns, stalagmites and large stalrates.

On Mount San Biagio dominates the huge sculpture CHrist the Redeemer, twenty-one meters high.

The Cala Jannita beach, known as “The Black Beach”, precisely because of the dark color of its sand, is another natural site that is worth seeing if you go to Maratea besides the beach of Macarro, one of the best known and frequented, where the blue of the sea merges with the gray of the sand and the greenery of the vegetation.

Don’t forget the beach of the Castrocucco shoal, where the rocks have created an enchanting natural pool or the beach of A’Gnola, sandy and extensive.

Food and wine tradition

Prodotti tipici Maratea

The lucan gastronomic traditions are different, in Maratea it is definitely worth tasting the traditionally handmade pasta, such as fusilli, macaroni and strangles priests.

You can’t miss the fish soup with the marateota, that is, rock fish and red pepper, sweet or spicy.

Herbs, legumes, vegetables and lampascioni, a variety of wild onions, can certainly not miss.
